Review Rules & Encourage Students to Enter Vocab Video Contest:

  • Students have had the opportunity to see several vocab videos. Now, they can produce their own!
  • Go to the Vocab Contest page, and review the rules with students.
  • Be sure to tell them Mrs. Labert has digital tools in the library they can use to create their videos.
  • Emphasize the deadline of November 22--the last day before Thanksgiving break. Students must have videos uploaded to SchoolTube by this date.
  • Show them sample student-created video uploaded to SchoolTube (from a previous year).

Give students time to play with the words:

Play a game or let students work with words by doing on the following activities:
  • Thriver (similar to 25,000 Pyramid)
    • Place one chair close to board so that student's back is to board.
    • Write vocabulary words on board so that all but the student sitting in chair sees the words.
    • Set a timer for one (1) minute.
    • The rest of the class provides clues (examples, words that mean the same, definition) without saying the words or parts of the word, until the student in chair says the correct word.
    • Keep score to see who can get the most words in one minute.
  • Dry Erase marks
    • Have students use markers on desk or dry erase boards or pencil and paper to create a 4-square. As students work, walk around the room to help give students ideas and ask questions about what they're drawing.
    • 4-Squares:
      • Write synonyms--words that mean the same.
      • Write examples/scenarios/situations that illustrate the word. For example, for sagacious (which means wise), they might write a judge, Solomon, jeopardy winner (the game show).
      • Draw a pic.
      • Write a sentence.
  • Let students share with a partner or the whole class.
