  • Titanic by the Numbers http://www.history.com/interactives/titanic-by-the-numbers
    • Drawing Inferences: Group students into groups of 3-4. Give each group a copy of Titanic by the Numbers in addition to showing on the projection screen if possible.
    • Review with students what an inference is by modeling.
      • For example: Choose a piece or more of information from the infographic such as “Titanic set sail less than 75 PERCENT FULL. It had room for 1,100 more people.”
      • Why would the ship be only ¾ full? Considering the facts that I know tickets were expensive to purchase probably costing 3rd class all they had, and this was the maiden voyage of a fancy ship that would attract more upper class people that could afford the trip, there had to be deeper reason for the vacancies. Taking into account our current economic situation over the past few years creating loss of jobs...income, I believe there must have been an economic reason for the lack of passengers on the ship. More research into the time period might reveal my answer!
    • Ask groups of students to review the infographic and create their own inference based on what they already know, and something they learned from the infographic. Does the inference lead to another question? Suggest students visit the media center to continue their research and answer their questions. BTW, the media center is reserved for Titanic research and activities all day.
    • Groups should write their inference on a strip of paper for display in the hall.
    • Share inferences with class.
    • Send strips to the media center.
