Length of Unit: (20 lessons/sessions)

Overview: Character Education is an approach through which teachers conduct their academic instruction in a manner that clearly and purposefully reflects postitive character attributes and 13 guiding principles: respect, responsibility, loyalty, courage, trustworthiness, compassion, perserverance, honesty, adaptability, initiative, optimism, contemplation, patriotism.

Unit Rationale: Children need essential personal and interpersonal skills that promote responsible and thoughtful behavior, increased self-respect and self-confidence, respectful and honest relationships with others, independence and interdependence, and a sense of emotional connectedness with oneself and others. Character education is the intentional, proactive effort to instill in students important core, ethical, and civic values. Character education's long-term solutions address moral, ethical, and academic issues that are of growing concern about our society and the safety of our schools.
