Essential Questions/Topic Starters: Successful comedian and entertainer Eddie Murphy said, "I've always had confidence. It came because I have lots of initiative. I wanted to make something of myself." Without initiative, do you think Eddie Murphy would be as successful as he is today?

Class Format: Journalizing, Whole-group discussion

Time Allotment: One 15-Minute Session

Today's Activities:
  • 1 minute
    • Define Initiative (and write or display definition on the board). Definition: The capacity for thinking up and acting on your own ideas without prompting by others.
  • 2 minutes
    • Discuss the Essential Question: Successful comedian and entertainer Eddie Murphy said, "I've always had confidence. It came because I have lots of initiative. I wanted to make something of myself." Without initiative, do you think Eddie Murphy would be as successful as he is today?
  • 5 minutes - Journalize
    • Journalizing: In your journal, write about a situation where you took the initiative to do something important without others prompting you to do so. In addition, can you identify important people in your life that you feel take a lot of initiative to "make something of themselves"?
  • Remaining Session
    • Whole-group Discussion: Discuss the students' journal entries and identify people you take initiative.
  • Homework: Take responsible action on your own, without prompting from others.
