  • To explain the purpose of the advisory program

Essential Questions:
  • What is the purpose of the advisory program?

Class Format:

Time Allotment:15 minutes

Today's Activities:
  1. Write the following words on the board: talk, listen, trust, support, respect, care, fun, and solve problems. Explain in your own words the reason for an advisory group and how these words on the board summarize the focus.
  2. Explain that the group will be doing a lot of activities (display ) and having discussions on many topics. Stress that you also hope to improve communication skills and help students learn how to solve problems and work out conflicts.
  3. State that there will be time to talk about school and how to be successful at school. School is the students' job, and they will feel better about themselves if they are successful at school. This success involves both their academic and social performance.
  4. Might have the students fill out Handout 1 ().
  5. Announce to class that next Monday the group will choose a name for their advisory group.
