Today's Objective:
  • To get to know the advisees

Essential Questions:
  • Why are peer relations important?

Class Format: Groups of two, whole group

Time Allotment: 15 minutes

Today's Activities:
  • Chose one of the following (or another such activity of your choosing) as advisees learn more about each other.
  • Paired Introductions:
    • Might pair students by using one of the following:
      • Counting off (If you have 14 advisees, count off to seven two times and then find the person with the same number.)
      • Two decks of playing cards (advisees with the same card are partners)
      • Draw names (half of the names go in/the other half draw for a partner)
    • Give advisory pairs 60 seconds each to ask each other these questions and prepare their introductions. Then allow time for each introduction.
  • Name-Matching Exercise
    • On a 5x8 card or piece of paper, ask everyone to write one word that begins with the first letter (or sound) of his/her first name that reflects something about themselves (Chris - creative, Cindy - smiling).
    • Ask everyone to say his/her name, the word, and the connection to the chosen word. Then ask everyone to toss the cards into a pile. Using a timer, ask for a volunteer to see how fast he/she can return the correct card to the person who wrote it. Do this a number of times to see if successive advisees can beat the previous time.
